PROVIDENCE, RI — New England's morning coffee of choice may have still have a presence on every corner, but Dunkin' could soon be losing the naming rights on the Providence Civic Center.

Reports from the Providence Journal and a number of other local publications state that Lincoln-based Amica Mutual Insurance Company is in negotiations for naming rights to not only the basketball and hockey arena, but the downtown Convention Center as well.

A spokesperson from Amica confirmed the negotiations with Patch on Wednesday afternoon.

"We are in active discussions with the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority about securing the naming rights to the Convention Center and Civic Center," the spokesperson said. "While nothing has been finalized yet, we’re excited about the potential opportunity."

The naming rights agreement between the Convention Center Authority and Dunkin' came to an end on June 30, but the state agency controlling the Civic Center, Convention Center and Veterans Memorial Auditorium, allowed the name to remain until a new deal was finalized.

The 14,000 seat arena hosts concerts alongside its duties as the home for the Providence Bruins and Providence College Friars.

During the 2021-2022 college basketball season, 'The Dunk' became known across college basketball as one of the best home environments in the country. Perhaps that was because of the upstart team of transfers and veterans, though it was likely a combination of that and the tallboys of hard seltzer and beer sold at the concession stands.

Regardless, the arena will remain home to the Friars moving forward, but 'The Dunk' days may be coming to an end.
