PROVIDENCE, RI — Providence will continue repairs on road covers that are critical to the operation of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier vehicle gates. The next phase of work will focus on South Water Street, according to a news release issued by the city.

"These road covers house brace footings located in concrete chambers beneath the street, which help hold the gates in a closed position during a storm event," the release said. "This phase of the project will include removing and replacing the existing covers, as well as repairs to the cover frames, concrete structures and surrounding pavement. The work will consist of concrete and masonry repairs, asphalt patching and paving and pavement markings. This project is essential to ensure the continued functionality and storm readiness of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier."

The project is expected to wrap up June 27. Until then, South Water Street will go down to one lane between Tockwotton Street and the Interstate 195 East Ramp, the release said.
