Man Shot Outside Providence Mosque: Reports

A man associated with the Islamic Center of Rhode Island​ was shot while selling religious items outside the mosque, according to reports.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A 52-year-old man was shot outside a mosque in Providence on Friday morning, according to police.

The shooting happened around 11:20 a.m. outside the Islamic Center of Rhode Island on Haskins Street. Providence police Col. Oscar Perez told NBC 10 the victim was associated with the mosque and was selling Islamic items outside.

Imam Abdul-Latif Sackor told reporters the shooting was captured on camera. He said the shooter was standing outside across the street for 20 minutes before a scheduled prayer service. Sackor also believes it was a targeted attack.

"He was here before 11:30 a.m. thinking all the Muslims were going to come for the prayer at 11:30 a.m., and he just saw an opportunity," Sackor told reporters. "There were only two people out here. He saw his opportunity and took it."

"We've been here for years, and we haven't had this type of issue until recently," Sackor added.

Police did not release the victim's identity. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and is expected to survive his injuries, according to several news reports.

Perez told WPRI 12 officers are outside the mosque gathering evidence and talking to witnesses, as no suspect or motive for the shooting are yet known.

Perez said Providence police will provide security at the mosque during the investigation.
