RHODE ISLAND — On Monday, residents and businesses will take a moment to honor the life, legacy and work of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

As a federal holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will also mean widespread closures of government offices, libraries, plus schedule alterations to public transit and trash pickup schedules.

Bank branches will be closed on MLK Day, including large chains like Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. However, almost every retailer and restaurant will likely be open — although it's best to call ahead if you're unsure.
