PROVIDENCE, RI — Providence is set to shine bright next week, with the annual Christmas tree lighting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6.

The event is free and open to the public and includes numerous performances and activities for celebrants of all ages and abilities.

"I’m thrilled to kick off the holiday season with our annual Christmas tree lighting and bring our community together to share in the festive spirit," said Mayor Brett Smiley. "There are so many fun and exciting events we are hosting this holiday season, from this tree lighting to world-class plays at PPAC and Trinity, to unique artisan markets across the city where you are sure to find the perfect holiday gift. I hope you will join us and celebrate the season in Providence throughout December and beyond."

The event will kick off with a performance by the 18 Wheelers Acapella Group from Wheeler School, followed by the Lillian Feinstein Sackett Street Choir. After both youth choirs perform, Santa will join the celebration with a parade that culminates with the lighting of the tree at Providence City Hall.

Following the lighting ceremony Chachi Carvalho will take the stage as the headliner from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. After the show, cast members from Trinity Repertory Theater’s "A Christmas Carol" will lead the crowd in caroling past an illuminated light experience by The Avenue Concept on Eddy Street and down Westminster Street to the Holiday Market at Grant’s Block.
