Providence Opens Cooling Centers Amid Heat Advisory

PROVIDENCE, RI — City officials have established cooling centers and extended water park and pool hours for Thursday and Friday as a heatwave descends upon New England.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. until Friday at 8 p.m. The heat index could reach 104 degrees, according to the NWS.

Water parks and pools will offer extended hours, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Thursday and Friday. For a full list of water park facilities and locations, visit the Recreation Department's website.

Anyone wishing to utilize free cooling center services should follow the below procedures and guidelines, city officials said:

• Only certified service animals with documentation of status paperwork will be permitted inside cooling centers. No other pets will be allowed inside the facility.
• Water will be provided. These sites are not currently serving as additional food distribution sites during the heatwave.
