Providence Outdoor Skating Rink Reopening With Upgrades
Upgrades included a new cold floor, a state-of-the-art chiller system, and clear dasher boards.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The downtown outdoor skating rink in Providence will open Monday after getting some upgrades.
Mayor Brett Smiley said the Providence Ice Rink got $2.5 million in upgrades, with funding coming from the Providence Capital Improvement Plan, the American Rescue Plan Act, and revenue from rink and park permits. Upgrades included a new cold floor, a state-of-the-art chiller system and clear dasher boards.
"The Providence Ice Rink has long been a cherished destination for families and visitors and with these upgrades, we’re ensuring it remains a vibrant, sustainable part of downtown for years to come," Smiley said. "This investment reflects our commitment to providing a space where the community can come together to enjoy skating, seasonal events and all that Providence has to offer. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this new, upgraded space will have across our downtown community."

Weather permitting, the rink will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily until early March 2025. Ice bumper cars will also be available from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
Visitors are welcome to bring their skates or have the option to rent a pair on-site.

"We’re excited to welcome the community back to the ice-skating rink — a tradition that brings so much joy to our city every winter," City Council President Rachel Miller said. "This year is special because we are also celebrating renovations. With a new energy-efficient cooling system, we’re cutting costs, extending the skating season, and ensuring this space remains a hub for connection and fun in the heart of downtown for years to come."
The Providence Ice Rink will offer a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. Daily public skating sessions will be available, including special holiday hours for families and visitors to enjoy the ice.
Skating lessons will be offered throughout the season for all skill levels, from beginners to. The rink will also be decorated with festive lights and music to celebrate the holiday season.
