Providence Woman Charged With Falsifying Nomination Papers For Matos' U.S. Congress Bid

The allegations against Holly McLaren, 52, stemmed from the lead up to the 2023 special election in the First Congressional District.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Providence woman is facing charges after knowingly falsifying and submitting nomination papers during Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos' bid for U.S. Congress, Attorney General Peter Neronha said Friday.

The allegations against Holly McLaren, 52, stemmed from the months leading up to the 2023 special election in the First Congressional District.

On Wednesday, a grand jury returned an indictment charging McLaren with two counts of falsely certifying nomination papers and two counts of filing false documents with a public official.

Prosecutors said that between July 11, 2023, and July 13, 2023, McLaren knowingly falsified nomination papers, and caused those nomination papers to be submitted to the Jamestown and Newport Boards of Canvassers on behalf of Matos, a Democrat.

The defendant is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Aug. 8.
