PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island Hospital in Providence reportedly lost power Wednesday morning and is running on a backup generator.

A Lifespan spokesperson told NBC 10 the hospital lost power around 8 a.m., and backup generators were activated. Rhode Island Hospital is now on diversion, which means new emergency room patients will be sent to other local hospitals.

"We are now transitioning to a secondary power source from Rhode Island Energy and are moving away from the backup generators, which will take several hours to be fully operational," a Lifespan spokesperson told WPRI 12.
