RI State Police ID Providence Man Killed In 3-Car I-95 Crash

RI State Police say a freight truck rear-ended a Honda Accord that was being towed by a Toyota Highlander, killing the Honda's driver.

EXETER, RI — Rhode Island State Police have identified the man who died in a three-car crash on Interstate 95 in Exeter on Sunday.

State police were called to the crash scene around 6:52 p.m. According to state police, a 2011 Honda Accord broke down on I-95 Northbound and was being towed by a 2024 Toyota Highlander.

The Toyota and the Honda entered the first lane of travel of Route 9 while driving slowly. But a short time later, a Freightliner truck rear-ended the Honda, state police said. All three vehicles then came to rest across the highway, requiring all lanes to be closed until 10:30 p.m.

State police said the driver of the Honda, Sandro Aguilar, 51, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two occupants of the Toyota were also transported to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries. The operator of the Freightliner was not injured.

State police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Any additional witnesses are asked to call the Rhode Island State Police Hope Valley Barracks at 401-539-2323.
