Tornado Touched Down In Lincoln: National Weather Service

The weather service is sending people to North Providence and to Lincoln to survey the damage and decide if a tornado touched down.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The National Weather Service in Boston has confirmed a tornado touched down in Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon around 3:34 p.m. The weather service also sent a survey team to North Providence, where a tornado has not been confirmed yet. But the storm uprooted trees there, too.

Twitter has multiple reports about downed trees and power lines on fire in North Providence, and roofs being ripped off houses in Lincoln. The damage seemed confined to a couple of streets: Angell Road and nearby Riata Drive in Lincoln; and in North Providence, Meadowview Boulevard and the area between Douglas Avenue and Smithfield Road. A tornado warning had been issued for Providence and points north. But there was bad weather in the southern part of the state, too. In Little Compton, hail was reported. And water spouts were seen in Little Compton and off Brenton Point in Newport, too.

Some 490 households (mostly in Providence and in Lincoln) lost power Tuesday afternoon, according to National Grid. As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 333 households were off the grid. Fewer than five homes in Providence were impacted. In Lincoln, 205 homes were in the dark, and in North Providence, 122 customers were off the grid. The company estimated they would restored around midnight.
