  1. Cranston City Councilmember Aniece Germain and Providence City Councilmember Nirva LaFortune held a press conference at the Rhode Island State House in Providence on Tuesday, calling on the Biden Administration to task for better treatment of Haitian refugees at the southern border. The councilmembers, both Haitian-Americans, are asking the administration and Rhode Island’s congressional delegation to “take appropriate measures to ensure that Haitian people are treated with respect and dignity in the United States.” The conference came as a reaction to the recent photos at the Mexican/American border that showed United States Border Patrol agents ruthlessly running down Haitian migrants on horseback. 2. Mayor Jorge Elorza and the Providence City Council filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green and the R.I. Department of Education over the funding of Providence schools. The lawsuit comes after General Treasurer Seth Magaziner’s office withheld nearly $5 million in state aid from the city at Infante-Green’s direction. City leaders and the Providence Public School District have been disputing over how much money the city was obligated to appropriate to the schools for the fiscal year that ended back on June 30.
