Here are the top stories in Providence today:

  1. A judge dismissed a legal challenge by firefighters to block a state requirement for health care workers to get a COVID-19 vaccine by Oct. 1 or risk losing their licenses. The Rhode Island Association of Firefighters argued that the state Department of Health's mandate violated a state law that requires the negotiation of terms and conditions of employment, and violated the firefighters’ collective bargaining right. Judge Melissa Darigan said, "the court does not believe this regulation imposes a new working condition." (The Ridgefield Press)
  2. The Providence Police Department has increased the number of officers out on foot patrol amid a crime wave in the city. The latest effort by the department comes after Providence saw its nineteenth homicide this year. Providence Police Captain Roger Aspinall says these patrols are happening around the clock.   3. Citizens Plaza in Providence, one of the city's tallest office buildings, is on the market again after reportedly being auctioned off in 2018. (GoLocalProv)
  4. WaterFire will celebrate "Then. Now. Next: 50 Years of Women at Providence College" with a full lighting on Oct. 2nd. (WPRI.com)
  5. Ramiro Velasquez, 37, was shot on Atwells Avenue following a confrontation with another driver near a Walgreens parking lot. (WLNE-TV (ABC6)
