Dems Take Assembly Seats; Smithfield Town Council Results Mixed

More results are expected this morning from the Rhode Island Secretary of State's office.

 

Smithfield Democratic candidates swept the three contested General Assemby seats, while the town council looked to finish with three Republicans and two Democratic members, and two Republicans appeared headed to the school committee.

With 7 of 8 precincts reporting at 11:25 pm Tuesday night, Stephen Archambault held a 5,061 to 3,894 lead in Smithfield's portion of Senate Dist. 22. Archambault took Johnston's part of the newly-expanded district by a 163 to 64 tally over Richard Poirier, and won in North Providence by a 2-to-1 margin.

After defeating incumbent Peter Petrarca in the September primary, Gregory Costantino led Republican James Archer, 2,720 to 1,592 in Smithfield and won by 1,045 to 693 in Lincoln. Costantino also secured Johnston's portion of House Dist. 44 with a 623 to 356 win.

And Democratic state Rep. Thomas Winfield won an eleventh term to the Dist. 53 seat, holding a 63-to-36-percent margin over David Bibeault.

In the local races, the council votes lined up as follows:

Suzanna L. ALBA (DEM) 4,652 11.6% Bernard A. HAWKINS (DEM) 4,559 11.4% Alberto J. LaGRECA, JR. (REP) 4,359 10.9% Ronald F. MANNI (REP) 4,346 10.8% Maxine A. CAVANAGH (REP) 4,331 10.8%

Democratic candidate David Fanning stood at 4,093.

And Republicans Kellie-Ann Heenan and Sean Clough led the school committee race over Ronald Riley and Joan DeFauci, with Heenan standing at 4,113 votes and Clough gathering 4,106. Riley was listed at 4,012.
