Effects of Hurricane Sandy Begin to Reach Smithfield Area
Strong winds and rain moved into the Smithfield area this afternoon, an early indication of what promises to be a major storm.
The leading edge of Hurricane Sandy — bringing with it rain and strong winds — reached Smithfield this afternoon.
Conditions are expected to worsen as the day progresses, with potential flooding in low-lying areas and a high possiblity of fallen trees and utility poles.

A quick tour just before 12:30 pm of Pleasant View Avenue near the Smithfield Police Department found slick roads and puddles forming at intersections.
Corey McSweeney, 16 and Mike Hamel, 18, were getting in a bike ride on Cedar Swamp Road before [hopefully] returning home to avoid the worst of the storm.

Rhode Island State Police Col. Stephen O'Donnell issued a statement around the same time, asking drivers to get off the roads.
"Let our Public Safety professionals do their job," O'Donnell said. "Seeking shelter in your home or an emergency shelter is the most prudent thing to do at this time."
No reports of damage or evacuations had been issued by the Smithfield EMA by 3 pm.
