James J. McDermott, Jr: Teacher, Retired Manchester, Iowa Superintendent
Former Smithfield resident died Feb. 25 at his Iowa home.

James J. McDermott, Jr., 58, of Manchester, Iowa, died Feb. 25 at his home, according to Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home.
He was the husband of Deanna (Ahrens) McDermott and father of the late Megan McDermott.

Born in Providence, he was a son of James McDermott, Sr., of Smithfield and the late Barbara A. (McNeil) McDermott. He had lived in Smithfield, Corwith, Iowa before moving to Manchester, Iowa six years ago.
He was the Superintendent for the Corwith School System before retiring six years ago. He currently was a teacher and special education teacher at Manchester High School in Iowa.

Besides his wife and father, he is survived by a son, James McDermott III of Madison,WI, four siblings, Sharon Salisbury and her husband Walter, Cyndi McCarthy and her husband William, Michael McDermott and his wife Janice and Patty Ricci and her husband Kevin. He was the step son of the late Mary E.(Dorsey) DeRobbio McDermott.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Michael’s Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield, Saturday, April 13 at 9 a.m. Burial was in Iowa.
