Happy Monday, Smithfield - Here are some things to know:

SPD Female Self-Defense Class - The Smithfield Police Department is excited to announce the 2013 Smithfield Police Female Self-Defense Program, which starts on Tuesday, March 12.
The program is offered, free of charge any female over age fourteen (14) who resides in Smithfield or works at a business in town. The program will meet once a week, on Tuesday nights, from 6:30 to p.m. for five (5) consecutive weeks.

Board post openings - The town is seeking members to serve on the Sewer Authority, Historic Preservation Commission, Affordable Housing Advisory Board, and Financial Review Commission. Interested parties should submit a letter of interest to the Town Manager’s Office, 64 Farnum Pike, Smithfield, RI 02917 along with an application form. A letter of interest may contain your interest or experience in the field of each particular board or commission that you are applying for and, optionally, résumé information.

Old County Box Tops - Old County Road School PTA needs volunteers to help prepare box tops for submission. Interested parties should leave a comment on their facebook page. "It is easy and many hands make the job quicker...and earn OCRS free $," the PTA callout reads.

Nowell Academy Taking Applications - The First round of applications for the Nowell Academy are available for the 2013 - 2014 academic year and must be returned by March 15, 2013.
The Sheila C. “Skip” Nowell Leadership Academy Charter School is an ideal setting for pregnant and parenting teens or other students who find the traditional school setting unaccommodating. The Academy combines online studies with classroom work and is aimed specifically at students whose family responsibilities interfere with their attendance at high school. That includes teenagers who are pregnant or already parents, who are responsible for taking care of other family members, who are victims of domestic abuse or who lack family support.
