Old County Road School Kids Visit Stadium Theatre For 'Suessical'

Many students enjoyed a first time experience in an historic theatre.

School wasn't out for Smithfield Friday, which was a good thing for third graders at Old County Road School — their field trip was to Woonsocket's Stadium Theatre to see 'Suessical'.

A line of buses from Smithfield, carrying OCRS kids lined up outside the theatre at 28 Monument Square at about 9:45 a.m. Friday as a series of snow flurries blew across the city. Inside, though, it was warm, cozy and loud in the way you can only accomplish by placing hundreds of kids in an ornately decorated room with the anticipation of a Dr. Suess spectacle.

"This is a good experience for them," said one third grade teacher at OCRS. "They've never been to a theatre before."

Among the charges under her supervision were Giovanni Capadi and Nicholas Tsonos, who craned their necks to have a look at the cieling over their heads in the theatre and looked around at the burgandy and gold decorated interior with wide eyes.

A few Smithfield and North Smithfield children from Dr. Daycare also attended. One of the chaperones for that group was Gina Scotti, who happily presented Avery Bacon, dressed like the Cat in the Hat for the occasion. Seated nearby with exicted smiles were Alexis Carr and Mabel Smith.

"It's really pretty and I really like it and I'm really excited to see the play," said Ava Jarrett.
