Smithfield seems to have been spared the worst of the power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy on Monday, as fewer than 20 National Grid customers were reported without power last night at 9 pm.

At the height of the storm, more than 100,000 outages were reported throughout the state — with just under 70 in Smithfield earlier in the day.

Westerly and South Kingstown were hardest hit, combining for nearly 25,000 outages, with Narragansett and South Kingstown counting for another 15,000 of the total.

As the storm system weakened and continued to move through the area overnight, state officials continued to warn residents of the potential for power outages today because of high winds and a nearly 100-percent chance of rain.
