Smithfield Police Arrest Woman for Shoplifting at Rumford Pets Center

On June 19, at about 6:47 p.m., Smithfield Patrolman Justin Ferreira was called to Rumford Pet Center, 445 Putnam Pike, for a report of a possible shoplifter about to leave the store, arresting a woman at the checkout counter.

When he arrived, Ferreira said he spotted a woman, later identified as Christine Hoppe, 24, of 160 Colonial Road, Harrisville, checking out at the front register, according to his report. Ferreira asked the cashier if the woman was the suspected shoplifter, and the cashier confirmed she was. The patrolman asked Hoppe if she had any store merchandise in her black hand bag, which she denied.

After more questions, Hoppe placed the bag on the counter, saying, "I'll give it back," and began to cry. She opened the bag, revealing several pet toys and store merchandise inside, totaling $56.55, according to Ferreira's report.

Hoppe was arrested and transported to Smithfield Police Headquarters. She was released to her father's custody at 8:30 p.m. She was also issued a summons to Third District Court for shoplifting. She is scheduled to appear in court June 9 to answer the charge.
