Smithfield Police Nab Suspect In Stolen Truck

The suspect jumped out of the truck on the Douglas Pike and tried to run, police allege. But officers caught him.

SMITHFIELD, RI—Smithfield police captured a Pawtucket man suspected of stealing a truck. Michael P. LaFerriere, 47, of Pawtucket, was arrested early Thursday morning after a brief chase. According to police, around 1:30 a.m., they were alerted a green Ford pickup had just been stolen from a driveway on Douglas Pike. An officer on patrol spotted the truck, followed it and stopped it near 400 Douglas Pike. But the driver jumped out and led Ofc. Lucas Cruse on a foot chase.

LaFerriere was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle; Driving under the influence, second offense; Resisting Arrest; and Operating on a Suspended License, third offense.

He was held overnight and arraigned in district court. Bail was set at $10,000 surety. Police said he was also held on an unrelated charge.
