Election 2018: Tiverton Vote Will Be Official Wednesday
Town Clerk Nancy Mello said the candidates have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. to ask for recounts. Canvassers meet Wednesday to certify results.

TIVERTON, RI — It's hard to say if the fat lady has sung yet, as far as the 2018 Tiverton election goes. According to the unofficial results posted by the state Board of Elections, only 20 votes separate winner Robert D. Coulter from loser Stephen T. Clarke in the town council race. And only 21 votes made the difference on the local ballot question about casino gambling revenue: Shall the Town Charter be amended to allow Casino Gaming Revenue to be used on debt service, capital development, or infrastructure, and to prohibit its use on the operation budget? Voters rejected a charter change.
Some provisional ballots have not yet been counted, but Tiverton's vote should be official on Nov. 14, according to Town Clerk Nancy L Mello. (Provisional ballots are given to would-be voters when questions come up about their eligibility. Some of those ballots will be rejected, if the voter is not registered, for example.)
"The Board of Canvassers will be meeting on Wednesday, Nov 14 at 6 p.m. for certification of the election results," she said. But the state Board of Elections is "still working on (the) provisional tally," she said. Candidates also have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to demand a recount.
