LITTLE COMPTON, RI — Standardized test scores for students in Little Compton Public Schools ranked No. 1 in English and mathematics on the Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System RICAS, Superintendent Laurie Dias-Mitchell said earlier this month.

The RICAS is taken by students in third grade through eighth grade. According to data from the Rhode Island Department of Education, 68.3 percent of Little Compton students met or exceeded expectations on the English exam.

For math, 65.5 percent of students in the district met or exceeded expectations. Both scores are well above the state averages of 30.8 percent for English and 30 percent for math.

"As the saying goes: 'a community gets the educational system it demands' — and the Little Compton School Department/Wilbur & McMahon School, known for providing a safe, inclusive, caring environment with strong academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular offerings — is surely a source of pride and honor for the entire town," Dias-Mitchell said. "Though it’s true that state tests are only one set of output data in schools and there is always more work to do, these objective measures (the most rigorous learning standards/assessments in Rhode Island's history) tell us where our elementary school and middle school are relative to the rest of the state when it comes to our students' proficiency levels in ELA, Math, and Science."
