Rain Wins, Tiverton and Narragansett Softball Lose, on Dreary Thursday

The Tigers and Mariners can't sneak in a game before the storms came to Narragansett High School on Thursday afternoon.

NARRAGANSETT – Right before the bottom of the second inning, heavy fog gave way to heavy rains, forcing the postponement of Thursday afternoon’s softball game between the Tiverton Tigers and the Mariners at Narragansett High School.

In what was originally a heavily-scheduled day for Narragansett sports, the softball tilt was the only game to survive the first round of sports cancelations. Boys’ tennis and boys’ lacrosse were both canceled before the end of the school day.

However, the Mariners probably didn’t mind the reset button getting hit on Thursday’s game. In just two innings, the Tigers put five runs on the board.

In the first inning, Hannah Glowacki walked, and advanced to second on a passed ball and third on a groundout by Rachel Pimental. Glowacki scored on a groundball double by Jessica Drolet that hugged the third base foul line.

In the second, Jennifer Burton fouled out three pitches before drawing a walk. Taylor Furtado reached on a bunt single, but Narragansett pitcher Hannah Lindsley struck out the next two batters. Burton and Furtado both moved up a base on a passed ball, though.

Sarah Whitson then plated Burton with an infield hit. Glowacki reloaded the bases by drawing a walk.

Pimental then drove home two runs with a hard-hit grounder through the infield. The ball went through the left fielder’s legs and into the outfield, allowing another run to score, but Pimental was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

Tiverton took to the field for the bottom of the second, but the rain came right after, quickly causing spectators and both teams to run for cover.

Field conditions were a bit slick for both teams, as Lindsley and Burton frequently asked to switch softballs because of a lack of grip. In their lone inning at the plate, Narragansett had two runners reach on errors, but couldn’t plate either.

No makeup date for the game has been scheduled. Tiverton (5-1, 5-1 Division II-East) hosts Middletown (6-0, 5-0 Division II-South) at 4 p.m. Monday. Narragansett (2-4, 2-4 Division II-South) plays at Tolman (4-2, 4-1 Division II-East) 4:45 p.m. Monday.
