'Suspicious Explosive Device' Discovered in Tiverton Garage: Cops
The explosive device turned out to be an armor-piercing shell, police said.
TIVERTON, RI — A "suspicious explosive device" found in a Tiverton garage Wednesday morning turned out to be an armor-piercing shell, police said.

The Tiverton police and fire departments were called the the Riverside Drive residence where the explosive was found shortly after 10 a.m., the police department said in a media release.

"Upon arrival, personnel observed the suspected device, later identified as a 3 ¾-inch solid projectile," according to the release.

"As a precaution, residents in close proximity to the residence were safely evacuated," the release said.
The local departments requested the assistance of the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's Explosives Operations Division and the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Newport, according to the release.

"Specialists from the EOD units conducted an X-ray of the device and determined it to be an armor-piercing shell," the release said. "The item was safely removed from the residence and transported to an off-site location, where it was detonated without further incident."
