TIVERTON, RI — The Tiverton Planning Board voted unanimously Tuesday to reject a proposal to build a crematorium on Main Road.

Sakonnet Partners LLC proposed constructing the crematorium, but dozens of residents spoke out against it, because of concerns over emissions impacting neighbors' quality of life. Robert Fazzina, who lives next door to the crematorium's proposed location, told WPRI 12 he is relieved the planning board struck down the proposal.

"It doesn't belong here," Fazzina told WPRI 12. "It belongs in an industrial area."

But Sakonnet Partners has argued the town does not have the right to block them from building the crematorium. The proposed location is in a general commercial district, so a special permit shouldn't be required, a spokesperson for the company told WPRI 12.
