West Warwick Residents Targeted By Scammers Posing As Police: Cops

The scammers threaten to arrest residents for missing federal court appearances, police said.

WEST WARWICK, RI — Scammers posing as West Warwick police officers have called residents and threatened to arrest them for failing to appear in federal court, the department said.

"We are receiving reports that residents in West Warwick, as well as several surrounding communities, are receiving calls from individuals claiming to be members of the West Warwick Police Department who are threatening arrest for missing federal court appearances," the department said in a Facebook post.

"If you happen to receive a call similar to these being reported, simply hang up," the post said.

Police advised residents to provide no personal information at all to callers.

"Do not confirm your name, address, date of birth, social security number or any banking or credit card information," the post said. "Do not provide passwords or send them any money no matter how official they may sound."

In the event the West Warwick Police Department needs to contact someone, it "will find an alternative way," the post said.
