Ex-Woonsocket Gym Teacher Convicted Of Molesting Child

Prosecutors prove Steven Porricelli, 53, of Warwick, sexually assaulted a girl under the age of 14 in 2023.

WOONSOCKET, RI — A former Woonsocket gym teacher was convicted last week after prosecutors proved he molested a child.

Following a three-day trial, a Kent County Superior Court justice found Steven Porricelli, 53, of Warwick, guilty of two counts of second-degree child molestation. Porricelli was ordered held without bail until his sentencing hearing, scheduled for Jan. 24, 2025.

"Sexual assault against children forever changes the course of their lives, which have only just begun," Attorney General Peter Neronha said. "In coming forward and telling her story, this victim demonstrated incredible bravery, even as she dealt with incredible trauma. The more we can help child victims feel safe in coming forward, the more we can successfully prosecute these perpetrators. I am grateful to the Warwick Police Department and my prosecutors for their excellent work on this case."

During the trial, prosecutors proved that on May 19, Porricelli sexually assaulted a girl under the age of 14 at his home in Warwick. Prosecutors said Porricelli knew his victim.

"Sexual assault cases involving children are among the most difficult cases we investigate," said Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor said. "I commend the bravery that this victim displayed throughout this process, thereby ensuring that no more children will suffer at the hands of this defendant."
