9 Killed On SC Highways Over the Weekend

This brings the 2012 total to 500 deaths since the first of the year.

So far in 2012, 32 people have died on South Carolina highways in Charleston County, and 500 have died on roadways statewide.

This comes after an additional nine deaths statewide over the past weekend, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The nine deaths from Aug. 17 to 19 included four motorcyclists and five vehicle occupants. One was not wearing a seatbelt.

The total number of fatalities from accidents in Charleston County is down four from this time in 2011, when 36 people had been killed on roadways in the county.

The statewide total of 500 roadway deaths so far in 2012 is also down from the 2011 total of 525 by this point last year.

Of the 500 deaths so far in 2012, 332 were occupants of motor vehicles, and 200 of them were not wearing seatbelts, according to information released by the SCDPS.
