Charleston County Clerk of Court Expands Online Services

Charleston County Clerk of Court, Julie Armstrong, today announced the use of new online technology that will allow greater access and efficiency for taxpayers.  Armstrong challenged staffers to develop and expand online services.

“I wanted a more efficient way for people to do business with the courthouse,” said Charleston County Clerk of Court Julie Armstrong. “Our goal was to utilize current trends in technology to provide easier access to the courthouse at no cost to the taxpayer.”

Armstrong is proud to announce the development of an online juror response option.  “We are the first Clerk’s Office in the state to provide this service to jurors.”  For each term of court, 300 Charleston County residents receive a juror summons. Under the current process, prospective jurors have to fill out the paper forms and mail them back. County staffers then sort the responses by hand to make sure the forms are filled out correctly.  With this new option, those who receive a summons can go online at www3.charlestoncounty.org to fill out and submit the appropriate form for jury duty. Online users can also download exemption forms if applicable.  This new process is more convenient for the public and more efficient for the court.

The Clerk also announced the release of a new web application named “court plus” that makes it easier to search and access court records from any internet-connected device.  Users can create a list of “favorite” cases and configure notifications to track filings.  “Courtplus.org is optimized for mobile devices and with the notification feature, you have instant access to court records.”  Family Court filings and notifications will be available in the second phase scheduled for release in the coming weeks.

Visitors to the courthouse can also take advantage of a new public Wi-Fi network accessible throughout the Judicial Center.  The Wi-Fi service is free and is secured by a password that can be obtained from the Clerk’s Office.

“I want to recognize our staff that took on this challenge and exceeded my expectations.  I would prefer our citizens be online versus waiting in line. We will continue to look for opportunities to improve our services to the citizens of Charleston County,” said Armstrong.
