Our speaker this month is Dr. Jocelyn Evans, the Chair of the Department of Economics and Finance and a Professor of Finance at the College of Charleston. She will discuss the “importance of political policies following recent changes in the stock market environment.”
“During the recent stock market crash, several Americans saw large declines as large as 50% reduction in their retirement and personal portfolios. This caused many individuals to become pessimistic and called for regulation and political policies to limit risk taking by financial institutions. What many voters do not know, however, is whether the great recession was an anomaly or the “new norm.” [Dr. Evans] will present information that shows that the stock market is changing, which will have a dramatic impact on individual’s investments and the social security fund. Afterwards, [she] will participate in a discussion about the role that government should play regarding individual investment strategies.”
