Back to the Ballot Box: St. Andrews PSD Runoff

No doubt 2012 was a weird year. After the ballot mess that saw more than 200 candidates removed from ballots across the state and a protracted legal battle over the S.C. Senate District 41 race, one last twist should come as no surprise.

Write-in votes were important in many races this year, one incoming Charleston County School Board member got more than 5,000 write-in votes for a Downtown Charleston seat on the board. But the results in the St. Andrews Public Service District race may have been the oddest outcome on the ballot.

Like several other local races in Charleston County no one actually appeared on the ballot in that race, but eight people ended up with the same number of votes - they each got 2 and beat out 145 other people who only received a single vote.

A runoff election will be held on Tuesday Nov. 20. The following candidates will appear on the ballot:

• Jeff Gladwell
• John B. Johnston III
• Lashaunna Brown
• Laura Toney 
• P. John DeStefano.

Only those registered voters who live in the St. Andrews Public Service District are eligible to vote in the election.
