Best of: Alchemy Wins the Coffee Cup

West Ashley Patch users selected Alchemy Coffee as the winner of our Best of Patch: Coffee Shop contest

The best place in West Ashley to grab your morning cup of Joe is on Magnolia Road according to our users.

, beating out nine other contenders for the top spot. Books A Million came in second in the poll with 25 percent of the vote; Sojourn Coffee and Local Market & Coffee Bar tied for third with 9 percent each.

"I love it, it's awesome," Alchemy Owner Janie Mallard said. "I kept trying to put it out there and let people know to go vote."

Neslted in the middle of the Avondale Point Business District along a busy Savannah Highway, Mallard opened Alchemy almost four years ago after a career spent in public relations and marketing. .

Mallard said she was glad to get the support, and was a little bit surprised Alchemy beat out some other local shops.

"I'm always happy when we win something and get some recognition," she said. "I think we're a great place."

In addition to coffee Alchemy also offers a wide array of breakfast and lunch offerings. The coffee shop also features an ever changing collection of local art for sale on its walls, and hosts monthly art openings.

The shop is holding one from 6 - 9 p.m. tonight in fact as a fundraiser for We Are Family, a local nonprofit organization that provides resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, Intersex and straight ally youth ages 16-23.
