Confederate Flag Comes Down in South Carolina

A crowd gathered and cheered the banner's removal.

The confederate flag was removed from State House grounds in South Carolina today, following more than three weeks of debate after the slayings of nine at a black church in Charleston.

The flag was taken down in a ceremony presided over by Gov. Nikki Haley. An African-American member of the Highway Patrol Honor Guard officially took down and carried the flag, which will be moved to the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

Haley signed a bill yesterday ordering the flag’s removal that passed only after more than 13 hours of debate in the House on Wednesday.
