Charleston County Jail Boss Wins State Award

Charleston County Chief Deputy Mitch Lucas named South Carolina 2012 Jail Administrator of the Year

The South Carolina Jail Administrators Association chose Charleston County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mitch Lucas, head of the Sheriff Al Canon Detention Center, as recipient of the 2012 Jail Administrator of the Year.

“In actuality, this award is the result of a tremendous staff that takes great pride in their work and are committed to the public safety of Charleston County," Lucas said in a statement released by the Sheriff's Office. "I am a single part of a large and complex operation that requires individuals of the highest caliber, who choose to make a difference in their community, to work in a literally, closed environment, unseen by the citizens they protect.”

The Al Canon Detention Center the largest jail operation in South Carolina with a rated capacity of more than 1,900 beds and a staff of 461.  More than 31,000 inmates were processed through the jail in 2011.
