Charleston County Names New Board Members
Several new faces will be joining several Charleston County boards and commissions, but other vacancies remain

Charleston County Council has named 15 county residents to positions on six boards and commissions and nominated 10 others for five additional slots that S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley has to appoint.
West Ashley residents Kristen Gregory and Deborah Sherman have been appointed to the Charleston Center Advisory Board along with Mount Pleasant resident John Cato and Folly Beach resident Mike Ferguson.
The council added Jeffrey Crudup, of Charleston and Charles Warren, of Awendaw to the Procurement Appeals Board. Mark Hartley, of Mount Pleasant will join the Housing and Redevelopment Authority and Lolly Fabian and Ben Bryson, both from Mount Pleasant will join the Board of Assessment Appeals.

The Awendaw Consolidated Fire District Advisory Board will get five new members — William Louis Kitchener, of Mount Pleasant; Patricia Brown and Robert Shumate, both of Awendaw; and Charles Singleton and Edward Stroman, both of McClellanville.
Mark Peper, of West Ashley and Randy Coats, of North Charleston will join the Charleston Development Corporation.

The Council also nominated several county residents for positions on boards and commissions whose members are appoinetd by the governor.
Among those nominations are West Ashley residents Michael Eykyn and Ronald Bailey for the Saint Andrews Parks & Playground Commission. The Council also nominated four people for positions on the Saint Paul’s Fire District Commission — John Alston, Jr., of Hollywood; Andrea Gail Farrior, of Ravenel; Irving Gadsden, of Edisto Island; and Tony Garvin, of Adams Run. Two residents were nominated for the Disabilities and Special Needs Board — Leo McLaughlin, of Mount Pleasant; and Patricia Williams, of James Island. The Council also nominated two people for positions on the Park and Recreation Commission — Lisa King, of Mount Pleasant; and Wes Lybrand, of James Island.
The Council also nominated one person for the Charleston County Forestry Board — Frederick Kinard, of Charleston — that nomination will be taken up by the State Forester, Henry E. "Gene" Kodama.
Despite the appointments and nomination the Council still has several vacancies to fill on nine other boards and commissions.
Those vacancies include three spots on the Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals: one for an architect, one for a civil engineer, and one for a licensed electrical contractor. The Charleston Center Advisory Board has one open position. The Weed and Trash Abatement Hearing Board has two vacancies. Two positions are available on the Community Development Advisory Board: one for a representative from the financial sector and one for a representative from the legal sector. The Procurement Appeals Board also has a single vacancy.
Several positions are available on the Firemen’s Insurance and Inspection Fund. The County has four spots for residents in the Awendaw Consolidated Fire District; four vacancies for for residents in the Saint Andrew’s Public Service District; one vacant spot for residents in the Saint John’s Fire District; three vacancies for residents in the Saint Paul’s Fire District; and one vacancy for residents in the James Island Public Service District.
Other board and committees with open spots include the Accommodation Tax Advisory Committee which has seven vacancies; the Charleston Public Facilities Corporation with a single vacancy; and the Greenbelt Bank Board which has three open spots — one for for a representative from the banking/finance/accounting field, one for a real estate or land use attorney and one for a member-at-large.
The deadline to apply for one of the above listed positions is Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. Applications can be downloaded at www.charlestoncounty.org. The County Council’s Administration Policy and Rules Committee will review applications received for the vacancies at its Oct. 11 meeting, and make recommendations to the full County Council at its meeting on Oct. 16, 2012.
