Charleston Police Cadets Sweep Academy Honors

Cadets from the Charleston Police Department at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy earned class awards

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy awarded all of the class honors for the latest class of cadets to officers joining the Charleston Police Department.

"It's the first time that's ever happened," Charleston Police Department Public Information Office Charles Francis said. "A single department taking all the awards, we're pretty excited about it."

Officer Matthew Newcomb got the J.P. Strom Award, named for a long-time SLED chief, and given to the cadet with the highest cumulative point total on written tests during the training session. He also earned the Clifford A. Moyer Marksmanship Award for scoring the highest score on the handgun training range.

Officer Ryan Jones earned the Director’s Physical Fitness Award.

Officer Sean M. Harkins was selected as class leader.

The officers are among a graduating class of 40 from law enforcement agencies around South Carolina.

“These outstanding men and women are the beginning of the criminal justice process and we admire their dedication on this achievement,” Chief Gregory Mullen said.
