Charleston Voters Choose Council Representatives

In an off-year election more than 20 percent of registered voters headed to the polls Tuesday

CHARLESTON - A slow trickle of voters moved through West Ashley polling locations all day Tuesday, and by the time polls closed at 7 p.m. more than 20 percent of registered voters had cast ballots.

In the City Council District 3 race James Lewis, Jr. won out over four other candidates with 916 votes for 53.5 percent. In second place was Wilmot A. Fraser with 562 votes for 32.83 percent. None of the other candidates broke 6 percent.

Bob Thompson collected 99 votes for 5.78 percent. Willard J. Sheppard got 70 votes for 4.09 percent. Luqman S. Rasheed got 55 votes for 3.21 percent. Voters also cast 10 write-in ballots for .58 percent.

In District 5 Marvin A. Wagner won the seat with 491 votes for 58.80 percent. Michael Ray Mack finished with 339 votes for 40.60 percent. Five write-in ballots were also cast accounting for .60 percent of the vote.

In District 7 Keith Waring walked away with the largest margin of vctory Tuesday with 817 votes accounting for 84.49 percent of the vote. His opponent Bob O'Brien got 143 votes accounting for 14.79 percent of the vote. Seven people cast write-in ballots in the race accounting for the other .72 percent of the vote.

All election results were taken from Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Tuesday night and are considered unofficial unti BEVR certifies the results on Thursday.
