Here are the top three stories today in Charleston:
- A Charleston County widow has sued Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. According to Jennifer Pickney, the shooter of the 2015 massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church was radicalized by white supremacist rhetoric found on Meta's social media platform. The lawsuit specifically target's Meta's algorithms which the plaintiff claims maximize engagement at the expense of truth. (wpde.com)
- Charleston County's Sheriff has asked the County Council for about $2 million to increase deputies' pay rate. The money would be used to increase the pay rate to over $47,000 - about $7,000 more than the current rate of under $40,000. The department currently has over 100 vacancies at the detention center and 44 deputy vacancies. According to Sheriff Kristin Graziano, the department's starting pay rate hasn't increased since 2017. - Charleston County's microbusinesses can now apply for COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Funds. This is the second round of funding through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. The deadline to apply is Dec. 9. Microbusinesses can apply for up to $25,000. Click for application information. (Holy City Sinner)
