Clyburn, Harpootlian Falling Down on the Job

S.C. Sen. Robert Ford contends that state Democratic Party leaders are failing to support candidates across the state, costing Democrats political representation

— by Sen. Robert Ford

Rep. Wendell Gilliard and I,  supported four candidates for the Charleston County School Board. Three of these candidates were on the ballot and one was a write-in candidate. Three of the candidates had an easy election due to concerted efforts. Rep. Wendell Gilliard and I, sent out 43,000 emails and mailed several thousand flyers to Charleston County residents for our candidates. Matesse Miller had the support of the Charleston County Chamber of Commerce, Mayor J. Riley, Mayor K. Summey and Mayor B. Swails. The candidates for School Board who were endorsed by the Chamber and the three mayors had approximately $40k available to them.

Two of candidates that won Michael Miller and Rev. Chris Collins basically had no money but worked dilligenty as a result, we defeated the Chamber and the three mayor's system.

For some strange reason, Congressman Jim Clyburn did not support Rev. Chris Collins who was seeking re-election to the board and Mr. Michael Miller a new challenger. But he did support the Chamber and the three mayor's preferred candidate Ms. Matesse Miller. This support lead to her demise because many black citizens were upset because the Congressman chose to ignore two dynamic black candidates who are involved with the school system daily.

Several points for your consideration....

  • Congressman James Clyburn and Attorney Dick Harpootilian, Chairman of the SCDP did not support Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu (former Georgia State Senator) for the South Carolina 7th Congressional District seat. But she still received 45% of the vote.
  • Congressman Clyburn did not support Candidate Alvin Greene for the US Senate in 2010. But candidate Greene still received 560,000 votes or 41% against Senator Jim DeMint.
  • Congressman Clyburn and Chairman Dick Harpootilian did not support candidate Bobbie Rose for the 1st Congressionl District seat against Congressman Tim Scott. But she still ran a fantastic race.

Rep. Wendell Gilliard and I met with the Charleston County Chamber of Commerce to convince them to endorse Mr. Michael Miller and Rev. Chris Collins who was seeking re-election to the Charleston County School Board.

I have been sending out emails for the past three years explaining to people about the evilness of Jim Clyburn. Mattese, you would have won your School Board election if you had not sent out those post cards with a photo of you and Jim Clyburn.
