CofC Observatory Open to the Public Friday
The College of Charleston is opening its observatory to the general public for an evening of star gazing Friday

Light pollution in urban and suburban areas around the world limit the number of stars most people see on a nightly basis, but Charlestonians will have a chance to get a bigger eyeful Friday night.
The College of Charleston Observatory in the Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center at 58 Coming St. will be open to the public 8:30 - 10 p.m. Friday.
Early in the stargazing event, both the moon and Mars will be visible, though both will set early Friday night. Additionally CofC astronomers hope to be able to catch a glimpse of the Andromeda galaxy during the evening, according to a CofC press release about the event.

Views of the moon will be particularly good Friday because it is in its waxing crescent phase which means shadows that provide good contrast for surface features on the moon will be visible, according to Astronomy Professor Laura Penny.
The event is free of charge and children are welcome to attend with parents. Stargazers should enter the Science Center through the Coming Street door and check in with the Society of Physics Students host, who will provide directions to the location of the indoor and outdoor activities. Please note open-toe shoes are not permitted on the observing deck. Large groups (10 or more), or those who need special accommodations, should contact Chris True at truec@cofc.edu or 843-953-2031.
