Don't Miss the Middleton Place Rum Stroll

's weekly wine stroll will take a hiatus this week as the historic site looks back to part of Charleston's connection with Barbados.

The Historic Beverage/Rum Stroll event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and features an 8-year-old sipping rum from St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados and Sea Island Rum produced locally by Firefly Distillery.

St. Nicholas Abbey is one of the most successful sugar plantations in Barbados with a history stretching back 350 years, and is a heritage site focued on preservation and education in addition to producing traditional island rum. In addition to the sipping rum, the mixologists from Middleton Place Restaurant will also be making two traditional Charleston punch recipies that call for "good Barbados rum."

Tickets for the event are $30. It runs 6:30 - 8 p.m.

The links between the Lowcountry and the Island of Barbados go deaper than drink recipies though, as many of Charleston's early settlers arrived here from the island, and the historical connections between rum, plantations and the slave trade abound.
