Early Morning Shooting Sends 5-Year-Old to Hospital

Sheriff's Office looking for suspects, motive

Updated: 5:43 p.m. - During an afternoon press conference Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon revealed that shortly after a reported shooting on Pierpont Avenue his office was also notified of an burglar alarm sounding at nearby 2153 Catterton Drive.

When deputies arrived no one was at the residence but deputies entered through an unsecured door to investigate and found approximately 24.5 pounds of marijuana and a shotgun in plain view. After obtaining a warrant they searched the premises and confiscated the gun and drugs. They also found a hand gun in the mailbox at the address.

"The timing of that dictates that we consider whether the two are related," Cannon said. "It's just too much of a coincidence."

Cannon said the shooting on Pierpont was an odd incident.

"Shooting through the door is certainly hard to understand," Cannon said. "In a traditional home invasion they would have kicked in the door or tried to gain entry."

Cannon said the family living on Pierpont had been in the residence for about three months. He declined to address rumors that the intended targets of the shooting were previous residents of the Pierpont address.

One of the victims, a 5-year-old girl, was still in critical condition from her wounds, which Cannon said were caused by shotgun pellets that were fired through the door. The girl's father was also injured, but his injuries were not life threatening.

As of a 5:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office has not been able to determine a connection between the two incidents, but are continuing to investigate both cases.

The person residing at 2153 Catterton was identified as 28-year-old Juan Carlos Grant, and was arrested this afternoon at 7432 Tedder Street apt. B-1 in North Charleston after a two-and-a-half hour stand off with North Charleston Police SWAT officers, according to the statement. Grant was charged with trafficking marijuana.

At 1:02 a.m. Tuesday a knock at the door turned tragic for a Pierpont Avenue family, according to a Charleston County Sheriff's Office statement.

As the 37-year-old husband and father of the family approached the door two gunshots were fired into the home striking both the father and one of his children, a 5-year-old girl. She was taken to MUSC with life threatening injuries, according to the statement. The father's injuries were not life threatening.

Sheriff's Office investigators are investigating the shooting, but at this time have not released any suspect information or any potential motives for the crime.

The mother of the family and two other children were Aalso home during the shooting but were not injured.
