Nine WAHS Athletes Sign WIth Colleges

A group of nine senior student athletes at West Ashley High School signed with colleges today during National Signing Day

At least nine West Ashley Wildcats will be wearing a different jersey next year when the now seniors become college freshmen, and most of them decided to remain in South Carolina.

"This is the largest group we've ever had sign at this time," West Ashley High Athletic Director Richard Luden said. "We have a tenth kid that will sign soon too, he just hadn't made up his mind yet."

Football players Anthony Gilliard, Marvin Harris, Eric Hilton and Thomas Woodhead all signed National Letters of Intent Wednesday.

Gilliard signed with Southern Tech Academy in Charlotte, N.C. Harris has chosen Howard University, a histprically black university in Washington D.C. that was established in 1867. Hilton plans to attend Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss. Woodhead will be going to Gray Military Academy in West Columbia.

Luden said the school expects a few other football players and other athletes to sign Letters of Intent with schools before the end of the school year.

Also signing letters are girls' soccer players Olivia Dizon, who signed with USC-Beaufort, and Taylor Coleman who will be attending Winthrop University in Rock Hill.

Baseball player Matthew Cooper also signed a Letter of Intent with North Greenville University in Tigerville, just outside of Greenville.

Softball player Shelby Rogers will be attending USC-Sumter in the fall.

And boys basketball player Tre McLean has signed with Queens University in Charlotte, N.C.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story we incorrectly identified the school Anthony Gilliard signed with as the Southern Technical College in Central Florida, he has signed with a school called Southern Tech Academy in Charlotte, N.C.
