No Vote on I-526 for County Residents

A move to put a nonbinding resolution on the completion of I-526 failed at Tuesday's Special Charleston County Council meeting

For a few days it looked like the residents of Charleston County would be asked to vote on whether to finish I-526, but Tuesday the Charleston County Council voted down a motion to place a referendum on the interstate on the November ballot.

Councilman Vic Rawl proposed the question:

Should the Mark Clark Expressway Extension/I-526 project be completed?

After a lenghty discussion during which several council members expressed concerns about how exactly to word the resolution, and whether to even pose the questions to voters, the motion failed in a 6-2 vote.

Council members Henry Darby, Anna Johnson, Joseph Qualey, Herb Sass, Dickie Schweers and Chairman Teddy Pryor voted against adding the referendum question to the ballot. Council members Vic Rawl and Elliott Summey voted for the motion, while Council member Colleen Condon abstained from the vote.
