Police Arrest Store Employee for Burglary

Charleston Police charged a John's Island man with burglary in connection with a Sept. 10 burglary at the store where he worked.

A now-former employee of Dick's Sporting Goods has been charged with burglarizing the store earlier this month, according to a Charleston Police Statement.

Police charged Drew Barter, 24, of Staffwood Road, John's Island, with burglary — 2nd degree, on Friday in connection with the Sept. 10 burglary at Dick's, according to the statement.

Barter was among the store's employee who reported the break-in on Sept. 10, at the time telling police he found the front door open, the alarm disabled and money missing from the safe when he arrived that morning at 5:30.

Other employees told officers that a person would need two separate keys and the code for the alarm to get into the safe room, along with the combination to the safe, things only managers and assistant managers have access to.

During the investigation police came to believe that Barter was responsible for the burglary, according to the statement.
