Arrests, major crimes and odd incidents reported in West Ashley

The blotter is compiled from incident and arrest reports filed by the City of Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office in the West Ashley area, which includes ZIP codes 29407 and 29414. Persons charged with a crime are innocent until proven guilty.
Chemical Attack Reported
CHARLESTON - A West Ashley woman was treated for chemical burns on her face at Roper Hospital downtown at 11 a.m. on Monday, approximately 12 hours after she says a man approached her in the parking lot of her Dupont Road apartment complex, according to a Charleston Police report.

The woman told officers that after she parked her car at home around 11 p.m. on Sunday and an African American man who she thought goes by the name "Chris" approached her and said one of her tires was going flat. When she bent over to inspect the tire she felt powder or sand hit the right side of her face. Later her face began to itch and when she washed it, her face turned red. She went to the emergency room at Roper the next day and doctors there said the redness was due to chemical burns.
Knife Wielding Assailant Pepper Sprays Landscaper

CHARLESTON - A man working as part of a landscaping crew on Wantoot Boulevard told police a man riding a bicycle in the neighborhood tried to pick a fight with him and sprayed him pepper spray before riding off again, according to a Charleston Police report.
The victim told officers he recognized the assailant as someone who frequently has been riding a bike in the area. On Tuesday the man, described as African American, approximately 6 feet tall, medium build with a mustache and small beard and wearing a red hat, white shirt and black pants, approached the worker trying to pick a fight with him. During the altercation the assailant pulled a knife, at which point the victim also pulled out the knife he had in his pocket. Next the victim said his assailant put his knife away and pulled out a canister of pepper spray and doused the victim with it before riding away.
Officers were not able to locate the assailant in the neighborhood.
Wrecker Used in Car Theft
An Orleans Road resident told Charleston County Sheriff's deputies that someone drove a white wrecker into his front yard around 3 p.m. on Oct. 19 and towed away his 1993 green Mercury Cougar, worth approximately $25,000.
Construction Equipment Stolen
CHARLESTON - Copper is not the only metal thieves are interested in these days.
The manager of a West Ashley construction site on Sam Rittenburg Boulevard reported nearly $6000 worth of aluminum walk boards used on scaffolding were taken from the site between Oct. 1 and Oct. 18. In total 69 walk boards are missing, each worth $85.

CHARLESTON - Police are investigating the theft of a Post and Courier newspaper dispenser box from a West Ashley Circle gas station.
The box was reported missing at 4:07 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. It is valued at $800.
