Ringing In The New Year West Of The Ashley

Avondale Ball Drop is the place to be Dec. 31

New York has its ball covered in Swarovski Crystals, Key West has its drag queen in a giant shoe, dozens of other U.S. towns across the country drop other objects every New Year's Eve, and for the past three years the folks at have been dropping their own ball to ring in the new year.

The ball at Triangle may be the only other ball aside from the one in Times Square that comes down at midnight, Jan. 1, according to Triangle General Manager Michael Lotz. It's a 150-200-pound steel ball wrapped in LED Christmas lights, Swarovski is a bit pricey, that will shimmy down a pole in the Triangle parking lot Saturday night.

"We're going to have a big party that night with a fire and ice theme," Lotz said. "There's going to be a 15-foot ice bar, fire dancers, a burlesque show."
