Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Dogwood Road Burglary

Incident reported after victim learned of shooting on Pierpont Avenue

Charleston County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a 17-year-old in connection with an armed robbery at an apartment complex on Dogwood Road.

Devoun Bennett of 78 Ashley Hall Plantation is charged with burglary, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The charges stem from an Oct. 22 incident in which the victim, who lives on Dogwood Road, said Bennett and four other men he did not know forced him to the ground inside his apartment and stole $80, an iPod and seven grams of marijuana. All the men were armed with handguns, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

The victim told deputies he decided to come forward with the information on Oct. 25 after learing of a similar attempted robbery on Pierpont Avenue earlier that day in which a 5-year-old girl was wounded by a gun shot. At this time there is no known connection between the two incidents, or another incident in which deputies seized 24.5 pounds of marijuana, a shotgun and a handgun from an address on Catterton Road on the same day, according to a statement released by the Sheriff's Office.

Following his arrest, Bennett allegedly confessed to setting up the robbery of the Dogwood Road resident by texting him that he wanted to buy marijuana from him, according to the Sheriff's Office report.
