Skeletal Remains Found at Gilliard Construction Site
Workers uncovered portions of a human skull and teeth buried beneath a driveway at the Gillard Auditorium Wednesday

An archaeologist will be studying fragments of a human skull and some teeth found on the site of the Gillard Auditorium downtown.
The remains were uncovered by a crew using a backhoe to dig up a driveway on the site, according to a Charleston Police Department report. The driveway had been in place for approximately 50 years, the report states.
The remains were located 6-8 feet below ground, and appeared to have been at that location for several years. The Charleston County Coroner's Office declined to visit the site due to the state of decomposition and the absence of evidence of foul play, according to the report.
